Dealing with People with Difficult Behaviors

Communication
Dealing with People with Difficult Behaviors

As long as other people exist in the world, there will be conflict, disagreements, and personality clashes. They are simply a part of life. When we try to ignore difficult behaviors, it usually ends up costing us, but when an uncomfortable situation is well managed, it helps us to learn and grow — both personally and professionally. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to provide research-based tools and strategies for handling challenging interactions with your team members, clients, and other individuals. You will learn how to classify the types of difficult behaviors, understand what motivates these behaviors, and engage in behavioral interventions to prevent them from escalating or reoccurring. These skills will help you to maintain a positive and productive workplace.

About the Course

Overview

Most communication between teammates is largely productive and cordial. However, sometimes people encounter individuals with particularly difficult behaviors that make these interactions unproductive and stressful. To encourage a positive and productive workplace, it is important to develop skills to limit the number and the impact of these occurrences while guiding employees to more appropriate behavior.

In this course, through guided discussion, interactive exercises and role plays, students will learn several types of difficult behaviors, the causes and consequences of such behaviors, and new techniques to handle difficult conversations.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Recognize and assess patterns of communicating assertively
  • Describe the conflict resolution process
  • Learn and practice behavioral interventions for confronting challenging behaviors (bullies, slackers, gossips, etc.)
  • Distinguish between challenging behavior and other personnel problems
  • Describe the process for accessing help beyond personal resources
